What this tool does

It counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, and estimates reading time at about 200 words per minute — the pace of an average adult reading on screen.

Everything runs locally as you type. Your text is never transmitted, which matters when you are checking an essay, a contract clause or a cover letter.

How the counting works

  • A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks.
  • Sentences are counted at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, including Arabic punctuation.
  • Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.
  • Reading time is words ÷ 200, rounded to the nearest minute.

Common questions

Is my text stored?

No. It stays in your browser tab and disappears when you close it.

Does it work with Arabic and French?

Yes. Counting handles accented Latin script and Arabic, including Arabic sentence punctuation.

How is reading time calculated?

At 200 words per minute, a common average for adult on-screen reading. Technical text is slower, light fiction faster.

Does it count hyphenated words as one?

Yes. Anything without a space inside it counts as a single word.

Is there a length limit?

Only your browser's memory. Full-length documents are no problem.
